Passion's Side Effect Short Story (Dedicated to Jeemin Roh)

This is written according to her lyrics in the song~~

Passion's Side Effects

We say our hellos that end in goodbyes.

It used to be what I say to him everyday when I see him across the hallway. Sometimes he would pick me up outside of my house and we would walk to school together, holding hands and having small talks that we would forget the minute we start listening to the lectures of the teachers. We would laugh along the way, with our distance between each other so natural that it was almost joyful.

Our shoulders bump into each other once in a while, and we looked at each other's irises, and smiled.

"Hello," He would say.

"Hello," I would say.

After each day, the same thing happened.

"Goodbye," He would say to me at night.

"Goodbye," I would say.

It's so polite I almost forget

The way your lips felt under the streetlight

He would then bend down and kiss me. The luminent light on the streets shone on him in the perfect way. The nightly sky swayed above me, adding a calm atmosphere around us.He had a seduced expression on his face as he approached me. His eyes would glisten with a mixed emotion. It moved me.

Our lips went closer and closer. That was when our mouths touches. Our eyes closed one second before what we knew was coming. He would occasionally whisper my name against my lips, as if he was sighing.

I knew what it felt like.

***

His voice was soft with the goodbye. It was shaking vulnerably. I knew he did not want to hurt me. But it did.

My mind was completely blank, and then his voice vanished like the dust on my desk after my mom cleaned it. My life was back to normal, like he was not there in the first place.

But he was there. He once was. I remembered.

And even I was beginning to question my memory.

Was it even real?

Was it?

How you would throw me up against

The wall we scratched initials of our names with chalk.

During lunch, he would lure me away to MacDonald's or something and always give me half of his big French Fries. He would smile at me and push his half-finished fries towards me without a word. I took one and nibble with it for ten minutes. He would watch me.

We would go through my house later after lunch so that we could stay in the basement and either read or talk quietly so that we would not interrupt my little brother who was taking a nap during this time period.

I would always sit in front of wall where he wrote our initials on. It was written with white chalk, so we had to rewrite it from time to time.

He would suddenly capture my two wrists, sometimes my shoulder, and push me against that wall, then kiss me passionately. It would always make a huge 'thump'. It was supposed to hurt. It was supposed to be noisy. But I did not care anymore.

After patting the white powder off my back, he would laugh at my flushed face and tell me that he loved the salty taste of my lips from the french fries.

Maybe that was why he would give them to me.

And Maybe that was why I kept eating it.

Did you pay up your parents' phone bill caused by endless talks?

He'd call me everyday to say good night. But it never ended with just "good night" and eventually turned out to be a time more than one hour.I'd lie on my bed, hair wet from a hot shower, and lean slightly against the phone so that I would hear every bit of his voice. We used to talk about the things we see outside our windows. And when my curtains were closed I'd guess what I was seeing and lie to him because I was too lazy to open them. He'd catch me when I described the moon the wrong way, like when I said it was 1/3 arc when it was actually 1/2 full.

I once joked about our phone bills. And that he would be broke just trying to pay all for himself. He said his parents would loan him money, just that he'd have to pay them back in the end.I promised him when that happens, I would share half of the responsibility.

I wonder if I still have the right to take the obligation?

I'd count the freckles on your shoulder. They're sprinkled like stars, or on donuts.

I wanted to put my fingers on his shoulder, to count one by one his unique freckles. Touching through every one of them and smile and tell him how cute they were. Tell him how I want to bite it because donut sprinkles would look just like that.

I knew what he would do.

He would buy me a real donut in order to prevent me from biting him on the neck.It would be just a vampire, he would chuckle.

I've always wanted to do it.But I never did.

Maybe I should have.

And oh my God, I've become so hopeless. That's when I found out it had to end

I hate myself for not knowing where this relationship is going.
I hate myself for not being able to forget.
I hate myself for not wanting to forget.
I hate myself for wishing he is still by my side.
I hate myself.
I'm hopeless.
I'm hopeless.
Because I am thinking of asking him for help.
I am hopeless.

With all the letters that you wrote when I'se asleep. They now hide underneath the bed you swore you'd never leave.

He said that he wouldn't leave me alone that night. He sat beside my bed, stroking through my long hair.
Watch me sleep? I asked him.
Then that's just like Edward Cullen. He laughed.
He lied down beside me, with his eyes descended, covering his irises by eyelid. He looked half asleep except the fact he was twirling my hair between his fingertips.
I love you. He murmured.
I couldn't reply, sleepiness overwhelmed me.
Then he would hide underneath my bed when my parents came to my room to check on me.That was when he wrote small messages on the bottom of the wooden bed and sneak out in a way that I would never discover.
Check under your bed, I left a message. Was what he always said when I got mad at him for leaving. After a certain time, I stopped getting mad at him and began to go beneath my bed in order to check what he wrote.

The last time I checked, the little messages made the wooden bottoms invisible.

It felt like yesterday.

Now I feel just fine. I don't get nauseated when she'd kiss you.Lie, tell'em you're dead to me, ‘cause he'd hate it if I missed you.

I wish my laughter and the sardonic jokes about him with my friends would cover the sound of my heart breaking. He would never be dead to me. But I would never say that.
I missed him.But I would never tell anybody that.
I only used my boyfriend to forget about him.But I would never say that.
Not because it would hurt him.
Just because I want to shape my new relationship.
Just because it is not normal to think about him anymore.
Just because I did not want to show him any signs, any traces of my previous passion.

Bye, honestly, I hate-What we've become: so complicating to the point it's irritating.

What are we right now?
I wanted to ask him that.I am afraid.
Maybe we are not anything anymore. But maybe we are everything.
We can't put a name to this anymore. To this connection. To this distance.
Because it is too simple to put a name.
And 'us' is too complex.
I don't want to put a name.
It might ruin our balance.
Because maybe we are not anything anymore.

Passion's fun but trust is boring.Shut your mouth but keep it moving.

He should keep being himself. Because I love him for who he is.
He should fall in love with her. She deserves it.
He should stop trying to explain it to me.
Don't be dragged by me.Go.
I wish I was strong enough to shape my mouth into those words.

Too shy to tell him how we were.Wish I could spill it all the moreAbout all the fights and screams we shared.Never mind the nights and dreams alone.

What's wrong? My boyfriend asks me.
Nothing. I answer, smiling bitterly.
It's just something I've always had. I'm used to it.
What is it?
It's a side effect, sweetie.
Of what?
Of sickness.
The screechs, his roars echoed like a melody. I didn't care about waking up in mornings without his smile. As long I could dream about nightmares with him in it.
It's a sickness. It's a side effect.
Are you okay? He asks me again.
I'm okay. I reply, starting to sob. Because I want it.

I want it.

How much I miss you - I could never tell, I curse you, ‘Cause the hole you left a cavity, that's filled up by our brevityS-sickening. th-threatening. k-killing. st-st-stuttering.The side effects of you and me have left me broken.

Broken.

Shattered.

But I promise I won't make it difficult for you to move on.I swear my eyes will be typically dry when you say “Now I feel just fine.”I don't get nauseated when she'd kiss you.Lie, tell'em you're dead to me, ‘cause he'd hate it if I missed you.Bye, promise I will hate you.

He would never turn back at me and see if I was staring at his back anymore. He would smile to his new girlfriend when she sweetly beamed back at him, and then touching his shoulder to reach his cheek. To drop a kiss.
That would make it easier because I do not want him to know.
I don't want him to know all of the things I am going through. It's not his business anymore anyways. But I wonder....if I ever smiled like that when I was once with him.
I stifled all of my emotions when he talked to me in the school yard about the formal "goodbye".
I remember his expressions. They were full of sadness.
Thank you for being with me up until now, he said to me.
The words kept resonating in my brain.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
See you later.
Bye.

Passion is like a pill. It is like a drug. After you swallow it, the side effects will come. It is different for everybody. But side effects will eventually come.Sometimes it gnaws on your inside. Sometimes you feel dizzy and empty and collapse on your bed, thinking about how the pill would make you feel better.

How ironic.

Passion is like an eternal cycle.

A story that came out of my dreams

It was weird for me when I had that dream....But I think that it's so totally awesome that I should write it down.
The ending was kind of cliff hanging...if I want to continue it i might..but Checkmate is my major project at the moment so...maybe later?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I woke up in the dark room.

It was at night. Although that assumption may not be correct. Since the window was blinded by some black heavy curtains.

After a minute of blanking out in space to make my eyes get used to the darkness surrounding me, I realized that I was not in an empty factory like I expected to be, like in a dramatic action movie, with the heroine exhausted and filthy and waiting for some prince on a white horse to save her.

Ha. Please.

The room I was in was small. It could be described as a little wooden hut that people live in on a farm or a prarie.

This hut had a refreshing smell that people would not be able to find in cities. It was certainly pleasing my lungs. They had too much toxic gas in here.

It was obvious that this hut had a residence.

A bookshelf was visible in front of me, with its back pressing against the wall on my right side. Then there was a dining table in the middle of the room, still wooden and small. I guessed that it was only capable of holding two people, otherwise there would be too little space. Under the table was a thick carpet, but the color could not be identified by me because the absorbant color of black sucked the glory of all the other colors. However from the fuzzy fiber, I could tell that it was made of some type of fur. It seemed like there was more things ahead of me, though it was too dark for me to see.

My head was drowsy as if someone had dosed me with a million liters of mercury. Putting that problem aside, I had the urge to screech in the highest pitch possible in order to obtain some kind of assisstance from any random people. Random people who were not reluctant or dispicable to help me. Random people who were genuine enough to not kidnap me for their personal gain.

Unlike the ones who brought me here. Desparate to get fame and fortune by threatening my parents.

I did not meddle or disrupt anybody's private life. Why do they have the right to interrupt mine?

More importantly, how could I LET them interfere with my life?

Right now, I was as ashamed as a criminal in prison, who caught his entire life flashing by him but not capturing a single sight of the colorful world.

My parents raised me and tucked me to bed everyday. I was determined to make them happy.

There was no way that I was going to be stuck in here. I could not waste my life here. I had to make my parents happy.

Hearing the creaking of the door on my left, I temporarily put a pause in my tension and pretended I was still unconscious.

Before closing my eyes, I saw sparkling stars on the nightly sky when the door opened.

"Are you sure it's a good idea to keep her here?" One voice said. It resonated in the room like thunder. I recognized the voice. It was one of my kidnappers. The one with a brunette buzz cut, wearing a leather jacket and a skull belt. He was very tall and had a crooked smile on his face when he approached me. "I mean, there is a small town down the hill. It's not even that far away. Look, it's not even half an hour for us to go to the local store and buy some food. And I swear, we picked the food for 20 minutes."

"Do you even know the name of this town?" Another voice complained. This one had a higher pitch. I remembered it as well. The hooked nose person. He shaved his head so his nose stood out for me even more. His eyes were pointing outwards. He was the type that always looks menacing without even trying to be. "Pfft i bet even the police is lame here. Besides, this house is completely empty. Nobody is gonna know. I think the owner doesn't have a habit of locking the doors though, this place looks new." From that cynical statement I amended the frightening image of the man.

"What if the owner comes back then?"

"Relax!! I have a car hidden somewhere near here. If anything happens we just cut leave the girl and go. The dad is gonna hand us the cash immediately anyways. His precious daughter just turned twenty-one and she has a boyfriend. And before he comes with the money. You and I can enjoy some ecstacy with the beautiful daughter over here huh?"

And other one joined in the diabolical laughter to make a harmony.

I suddenly had a rush of adradeline due to the impulse to beat these two people to death. Nonetheless my rational thoughts restrained that urge. There was no possible chance that I would win against two muscular, strong men. Retaliating would be a catalist to imminent danger.

My eyelids wanted to open and see. But I forced them down.

Something vibrated against the wooden floors. It sounded like farts.

"Hello..?" The man with the huge nose picked it up casually and spoke. Although the indifference vanished the next second along with my ration:" What ?! What do you mean the parents are dead?!?!"

Then clamors of the two people's voices exploded in the room, yells of rage. Nevertheless I could not hear what they were saying anymore. They did not matter to me more than that simple sentence.

PARENTS. ARE. DEAD.

DEAD.

D-E-A-D.

OUT OF LIFE. MOTIONLESS. COLD. DARK.

Words blinked through my inner retina.

I felt like the world around me swiftly shattered into pieces, leaving into the void without a rope attempting to save me. I kept falling and falling and falling. But there was no suspensed heart.

No more warmth, no more of those smiles.

The next moment, tears began to flood out of my eyes. It took all my stength to gulp the pathetic weeps and cries down my throat. I remained motionless. I continued to let my tsunamis of emtion crash on the shores of my heart and brain.

While I was concentrating on calming myself down, I did not realize when the phone call ended and the noises subsided. I breathed in with my nose and slowly led out the air i took in order to make it unnoticable. My heart beat was pummeling against my bones so fiercely that they could practically crack.

And I would not feel it.

"......What are we gonna do? We have no money, a girl and in the middle of an unknown town." The buzz cut guy whispered absent-mindedly.

"Do you think.....we can sell her as a sex toy?" Said the other man. "I mean, she is pretty and no scars anywhere..I bet she can somewhat sell her for a fair price."

They were still thinking of a way to get money.

Nausea nearly came out.

"Okay. I don't care what happens to her. But first I think we need to get some fuel for the car. It's gonna be a long drive."

"Good thinking. There's a gas station not that far away from the driveway. Let's go there and buy some and then get her."

There was a sound of feet tapping on the ground. They were getting up.

The taste of hatred was in my tongue, I did not know how I did it, but it managed to not pounce on the men and scratch their eyes out.

Before they left, one of the men lifted my chin to give me some more of the medicine that doses people. They put it in a cup of water, letting it flush down to my stomach. However i stuck the pill with my teeth and hid it under my tongue. Fortunately my head was slightly tilted so it was within the reach of my teeth. I waited until their presence faded away.

I spat out the pill the moment the I felt that they were not near. My chest was heaving frantically due to the long endurance of sorrow and dispair. I was hyperventilating. Tears gushed out from my eyes and blurred my view. I was finally able to led a soft cry.

Portions of the pill must have went into my body when I drank the water. Already it was doing its work. It was not enough for me to completely pass out, but enough to make me uncapable of walking. My legs were tremoring when I tried to stand up.

I intended to run away. Since I could not, I had to consider another plan.

Slowly I made my way to the bookshelf that belonged to someone else and shuffled my across every level of the shelf. I collapsed onto the floor and hit my knee whenever my legs failed to receive my brain signal. I was not going to let that stop me. Eventually I felt a paper knife on the third shelf.

New plan: Make myself unattractive to sell to sex bussiness man.

The least they could do was to get rid of me. They would not kill me unless under demand. Murderer would bring a serious consequence. They were not ready to inflict that kind of trouble on themselves.

I was not going to give them what they want. And I was not going to commit suicide like some lame weak girls. My parents died. I bet they would want me to live. If I could not make them happy when they were still alive, I could prove to them that I could live as well as others when they were watching in heaven.

That was my weak rationality speaking.

My emotions were screaming of help, hysterical like a little puppy who got hit by a bus. It was crazy, jammed, chaos.

My desparate gasps for air substantiated that fact.

The conflict in my brain messed up my mind even more.

I stumbled over to the window, ripping the black curtains off of it. Window was big. I opened the window and stuck my head and arms out, still weeping. There was grass underneath.

Quickly I pushed the sharp parts of the paper knife out of its plastic protection. It seemed sharp, gleaming under the moonlight. Without much thinking, I grabbed my long brown hair and began to cut it short and as uneven and ugly as possible. After I have done my work, I put the sharp edges of the against the outter side of the wrist. "No scars" he said? Now my body was going to be full of fresh blood. I slowly pressed it down to my skin while sliding it at the same time, watching the red liquid seeping out from the scarlet flesh.

Blobs of blood fell onto the green grass, making a perfect contrast.

Red and green. How Christmas.

During the process of cutting, I bit on my lower lips so tight that the metal taste of blood was beginning to stimulate my tongue.

It hurted. So much. But it was nothing comparing to the death of my beloved parents.

I kept cutting. Even when the tears in front of my pupils were gradually turning red, i kept cutting.

"Claire!!!!!" Abruptly there was a sound of my name and a thud of the door flunging open behind me.

Startled, I snapped my head to the source of the noise.

There was a young man standing there.
He had an astonished yet anxious expression. His eyes were bulging out, mouth opened loosely. There was sweat dripped down his cheeks. I could make out a few heavy breathing using my incoherent brain.

His left hand was still on the door, stretched out all the way. He was wearing a beige clothing that was designed to look like a military soldier, though it was not camoflouge. I could not see his face because the blue cap on his head shadowed most of it, but a glimpse of short blond hair was visible.

He had sapphire blue eyes.

He stared at me with that face.

I stared at him.

That was how we met.

* * *

Grey

That was how we met.

The minute I striked the door open, she was there.

Her hair was unevenly short and messy, almost zigzagged. Her mint green eyes were crazed with fear and bravery, contradictory but blended perfectly. Tear traces were on her cheek and there was some glimmering liquid hanging in her eyes. She was kneeling down. Blood was leaking out from her outter wrist. I heard small weeps coming out from the inside of her throat.

She was holding a black paper knife. It was tainted in bits of flesh and blood.

It was my knife.

And suddenly I did not know how to ask for it back.

Untitled

Sorry that i haven't been able to post lately!! I was on vacation and after vacation i was busy catching up with tests...quizzes..blah blah blah
So this is a short thing that i came up for by impulse :D
I was bored one day and i wrote this
It's short but my friends told me to give it to a contest or something
I hope it's entertaining for you guys
This may be kind of dark and gory and confusing for some of the people so discretion is advised.
There is swearing in this so ya don't let your parents see this XD
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The girl is standing on a pointy tower.
Black hair, with a short blue dress like a mermaid. But it is torn, so maybe a fallen mermaid.
Her legs are revealed when the wind's naughtiness brings her dress up. The legs are not white, not marble, not perfect.
There are scars, dark scars, purple, blue, fresh red, and black.
Her long black hair is no where near her skin, they're curling, dancing frantically with the wind. The hair playing the female role, with the wind leading like a proper gentleman. Waltz? No, it is too fast and frequent to be a waltz. But it is not as shaky as salsa. So...perhaps an elegant tango.
Her back is towards me. She is facing towards sun, towards heaven. Although there is no heaven. Anywhere.
I cannot see her appearance.
The sun is purple.
She is scrawny. So thin that she is the air itself.
But not transparent.
Blood is tainting her scorched skin. Blood is seeping out from her scars, dripping down like ruby tears.
There are nothing surrounding her except for a desert full of corpses. Dead bodies. Some bodies are already bones, some are fresh, and some are mainly dry with black skins attached to a part of it. Their expressions are excrutiatingly tormented. The type that no human would want to witness. But that is the ugly truth. Repugantly beautiful.
A sword is visible. It is stuck in the middle of the slender tower, as if someone jabbed it in there. But it is still powerful, forceful, teeming with pride and glory. Nothing could hide the sense of bitter triumph under the green rust.
A dirty world, an impeccably nauseating world.
But there she is, standing above all the people. Standing above the dead. Standing above me.
She did not turn around.

Opening my eyes, I am in my room once again.
My room is white, the sunlight draping in onto my bed.
There is nothing in the room except for the bed I am lying on. It is tidy, clean.
It is so bright.
In contrast of the world in my dream.
I do not know where it is, nor who am I in there.
I only know that the girl is there, and i was staring at her like she is the dream i am chasing.
Everything about her, makes me want to drown in the dream and never wake up.
I know it is another me.
The other me whose heart is beating in sync as hers.
The other me is non-existant in any world.
This me is hollow.
Like a shell.
I know this is the reality world. And the dream is just an absurd piece of fantasy.
But i cannot help but fall. Fall for the blood. Fall for the twisted image. Fall for the world. Fall for the girl.
In the dream. There is no me.
There is only her.
In the real world, the 'me' is irritating. The additional thought, the speach, the taste, the smell, are all fretfully annoying.
The existance, the presence, the people around me.
They seem so fake.
They live for themselves, they evolve around no one else.
The real me doesn't belong here.
Makes want to vomit all the disgust out. But I am not going to do it. Because the disgust will never run out. As long as I am in this world, It will never run out.
Please don't make me stay.
Don't wake me up.
Let me sleep.
Let me sleep.
Let me return to that world, where she is standing.
Let her free.

-------------You have no idea what you are talking about!!
---------------No she is real!!!!! You don't understand!! You don't understand!!!
---------------This is reality!!! Wake up and live in it!!!
---------------No!!! This is all a lie!! I don't belong here!! Let me go! She is there!! I have to go!!
---------------Stupid!! *slap* You fucking son of a bitch!! Like a mental doctor like me would ever treat a psycho like you!!!

You are all monsters.
How can monsters understand my feelings.
Monsters have no brain.
They cannot see what I am seeing.
That beautiful sight.
I am going to that world. To see her again.
See her standing on the tip of the pure white tower.
Let me sleep.
Let me sleep.
Let me get to that taste of bliss.

-End?-

Same sky

Well...I'm feeling poetic at the moment. :)
Mostly because I read this book...it has a really light writing style, as if everything is just light and shallow but deep and beautiful. I have always liked that kind of writing...despite that I also like advantures and fantasy.
SO the topic, as you can see, is "sky".
Yes, this thing doesn't have any meaning, and it doesn't need a meaning.
I'm just writing whatever I felt like writing. :D
This is short, I'm not going to continue it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sky has all kinds of definitions.
Sky is blue.
Sky is grey.
Sky has cloud.
Sky is the mixture of the Earth's atmosphere and Ozone layer.
No matter how you explain it, one thing does not change.
We all share the same sky.

2009, Fall, Tokyo, Shibuya, 8:00pm
Nako Rikuyama looked out the window.
She had lived in this city for almost all of her life.
The new job was easier than she thought.
Moving out of her home seemed to be a mistake after all.
She was living in a small apartment with 3 rooms, with a big glass window like those ones in a luxury hotel. She had placed her bed right beside it. She liked the soft yet cool breeze brush through her cheek when she was sleeping.
The room was clean.
In this big city, cars and buses and people's chatter buzzed into her brain.
She closed the window, hoping for some peace and quiet.
Slowly she sauntered in front of her computer, and began to browse the internet.
From news to fashion, from fashion to news. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Like a mechanical robot, she scanned throught the pages. A scent of tedium rose in the air.
Her cellphone vibrated quietly on the desk.
Nako smiled.
It was a call from her boyfriend.
She missed him.
Her boyfriend was a very enthusiatic person. He liked to grin towards her, showing his pearl like teeth completely and ended up looking like a idiot in the middle of the street.
But to her, everytime he smiles, it was like those warm and fuzzy sun coming out during the coldest days of winter, implying that spring would come soon.
Nako pressed the button:"..Hello?" The fondness and longing within her voice was now pouring out with no return.
She heard her boyfriend's laugh. "Hi." He replied. Nako knew his obsidian eyes were lingering. She suddenly missed his hugs. "Missed me?" Said the young man teasingly. But before she could answer, he laughed out another sentence:"Of course you did."
"You haven't changed at all. Looks like that mandatory boot camp did you no good." Thinking of something to retort, Nako accused.
"But you didn't want me to change, did you? Na-na?" Na-na was a nickname that he picked for her ever since they started to become friends.
Nako sighed.
"...Hey, are you free?" Inquired the young man, abruptly placid.
"Yes." Knowing what he was going to ask, the girl inhaled and responded with a whisper. As if a promise that she desired for a long time.
"I know it's noisy and I really need a rest." He paused for a while. "But I really miss you, Nako. Can you come? Please?"
"Yes." She repeated. "See you there."
She did not need to know when or where. She already knew.
Exchanging a goodbye, Nako hung up.
The quiet tenderness gradually filled her heart.
She walked towards the glass window,
And looked up.
The stars were sparkling like thousands of diamonds on the night sky.
Tonight was going to be great.

2000, Winter, England, Oxford, 7:00am.
It was snowing.
Elena Worktilt opened her eyes.
The surrounding was not like the home she recognized at all. There were a ton of tubes taped to every part of her body; the stinging scent of medicines; the whiteness.
Everything was so quiet.
She was in the hospital.
Elena had tried to move, but the moment she did that the sharp and ferocious beast called pain gnawed on her brain. She wobbled, laying back down.
She had lost everything. Her mother, her father, her dolls, her toys.
The 7 year old girl's eyes were frightfully void.
The window was tainted with thick frost. She knew the snow was falling down.
She loved snow.
Not anymore.
She could still hear the that deafening screech of tires when the car lost control. Her scrawny body flew against the pole.
Her parent's joyful smiles ceased in that second.
Crimson liquid splattered all over the snow. Slowly it bloomed bigger and bigger.
In the girl's view, the world turned from impeccable to sinful. From dreamy tenuous to maliciously distinct.
She yanked off all the tubes and needles from her body. Skin got ripped off. She didn't care. It didn't hurt.
Elena lurched to the door, wearing only a white hospital skirt.
Mommy, I miss you.
Daddy, I love you.
Where did you go? I want to see you.
Mommy, smile to me. Daddy, hug me.
Elena will never yell again. Elena will be a good girl. Elena will do well in school. Elena will never beg for toys.
Mommy, Daddy.......Come back.
Come back.
The little girl knelt down on the pile of snow.
All the other patients examined her curiously.
Neglecting everything, the girl looked up.
The snow flakes fell on her cheeks like feathers.
The sky was frozen with blobs of condensed clouds.
Monochrome.
Elena's face contorted with misery.
She screamed, water flooded out onto her cheek.
But the world was still silent.
She was not able to hear anymore.

2007, Spring, America, Ariton, 12:00pm.
Ethan Jackdorm was very excited.
Today was the day that he and his best friend sneak out of school to go to the beautiful lake they just discovered in the middle of the forest. It was a great hang out place; they would have so much fun playing in the water.
Sitting in the classroom, Ethan tapped the dest impatiently and glanced at his best friend-who was sitting on the other side of the classroom. His best friend had a very healthy figure. He winked as their eyes met.
It was almost lunch, they would go out at that time and not go to the afternoon classes. They were in Grade 8, the teachers were loose on them since it was they were going to graduate from middle school soon.
Plus, this city was too small anyways.
Finally the bell rang. The two guys bolted out of the school immediately. They deliberately ate a lot of breakfast so that they would not be too hungry.
The lake was beautiful. The air was fresh and the color was very very bright. The surface of the water glimmered delightfully.
They sat side by side on the edge of the lake.
"Hey we should skip more." His best friend grinned.
"Ya how bad a grade do you wanna get?" Ethan rolled his eyes. "I thought you are going to New York or something and meet pretty girls."
Best friend laughed:"Hey I ain't gonna leave if you don't go with me man. We're going together."
"I don't wanna fail my grade like you don't want to stop flirting to girls, idiot."
The next minute he realized that he was wet. When he rose up to the surface he saw his best friend laughing at his flustered and confused expression.
Ethan looked like he was those people who would wonder around on the street during midnight looking for a person to kill.
His best friend offered a hand to him, helping him up.
Bad choice.
The diabolical arc on the side of Ethan's mouth when he grabbed the hand made him realize that.
As he expected, Ethan pulled him down. Water rushed into his best friend's mouth, eventually he gulped down 10 litres of lake water before he finally poped his head out from the liquid.
Ethan chuckled at his best friend's expression. He bet that he looked like that when he was pushed down as well.
They stared at each other for a while.
Then, laughter resonated in the forest.
Sunlight shone on them.
Ethan gazed at the sky when he lay backwards and started to float.
It was imperceptibly blue.
He beamed.

2006, Summer, Italy, Turin, midnight.
Alessandro Pisano coughed painfully in the Nursing Home.
His arms were tired pushing the wheel chair. So he rested under the roof outside.
Water was drizzling down.
He slowly opened a small album in his pocket with tremoring, wrinkled hands.
Alessandro's finger stroked one picture after another.
Some of them were black and white, some of them were brushed yellow by time, some of them still looked new and colorful.
Those were the photos of his greatest memories.
The day he learned how to ride a bike.
The day he graduated from elementary school.
The day he went to prom with the girl of his dreams.
The day he went to university.
The day he began to work.
The day he got married....
Seeing himself in the pictures, his eyes narrowed happily.
The preservations of his life.
His family all smiled happily in the pictures.
And his wife stareing lovingly at him when he wasn't looking.
The funerals of his parents.
Sad moments, happy moments, angry moments.
All of a sudden, he missed his family.
But he knew that they were all doing well.
His wife had just passed away one week ago.
He could not forget the last words. She took his hand, beaming with glinting liquid on her eyelashes-age did not blanch away her beauty. And there she whispered:"I'll be waiting."
The kids did not need him to live anymore. They had grown up to be wonderful, independent adults.
It was their generation now.
Alessandro moaned. He felt sleepy.
It was time for him to go.
He leaned his head against the back of the wheelchair, enjoying the sky from this body for the last time.
Rain fell upon his hand.
It was pretty.
Feeling relieved, the old man closed his eyes peacefully.

Different people, different time, different places, different emotions.
But the sky stays the same.
It hovers over us, witnessing everything, and not say a word.
We all live under the same sky.

Checkmate(Original) Chapter 3(In progress)

Something was happening to Novus.
And it was obvious that everybody who saw him knew that too.
His blood was dancing in his arteries, hitting repeatedly from the inside of his neck and wrist. His heart was faster than any mortal speed. His muscles rippled, tensing. The rush of adrenaline overwhelmed his entire body. Something was slowing gnawing his consciousness; he fought back mentally.
Every cell of his body was tingling beneath his skin, as if making an attempt to get out.
The boy coughed in misery. This was killin him.
It was a huge spillage of energy. Except that it was blue and glowing.
Novus groaned and struggled to turn his head in order to look over his back.
She was not there.

* * *

Just about 10 minutes ago. Everything was normal.
The guards came back, and they were coming to the guest that was across from the Treasure Chest.
The girl on his back seemed to have no clue what was going on.
[Okay, give up you vulture!]
Something above his head vaguely buzzed the words. Novus snapped his head up, noticing a big announcer sticking tightly to the concrete wall. The girl furrowed at the spiteful sounds.
Novus could hear the footsteps getting louder and louder. He must've left some kind of flaw when he was going along with the plan.
There was no point trying to escape now; he could never be able to jump of a building unless he was on the first floor. And guess what floor he was in?
The 4th. The life risking fourth floor.
The blond boy flexed his legs.
He had got a plan.
The guards-different ones, busted the locked door in one kick.
These people were even more menacing than the ones Novus dealt had with. The major difference was that they looked keen. Their eyes were glimmering signs of sophistication and wisdom along with glimpses of irritation and annoyance towards the teenage boy.
"Hands up!" One of them shouted loudly. When Novus led out a "hmph" in his nose that guard repeated the same thing-this time with more force. "I said hands up!"
"I would." Replied Novus, eyes somehow lingering. He looked awfully calm and indifferent despite that his mind was racing so much that there was not enough blood to support the brain. "But as you can see, I'm carrying a person. I suppose you can see that."
The hint of amusement made the guards more alert. This was not an ordinary boy, they were certain of it. He was able to sneak into the facility and disguised himself as a guard without being noticed in anyway until the headmaster heard the scream of pain from the naked guard in the storage room.
The guards looked at one another, then glowered at the teenage boy. "So you will not surrender?" The leader of the team inquired. His voice was thunderous.
Novus smiled. "Ask me again later."
Just as the security team were about to jump over the small body like they were playing a brutal football game, Novus quickly took out the other smoke bomb and thrashed it onto the ground.
It exploded immediately due to the impact with the ground and blew away a couple of the guards.
This bomb could be harmful if it gets stimulation such as impact and water. It was supposed to be failure because Faw was supposed to create the bomb to be non-harmful.
But Novus, at this moment, could not show more gratittude towards Faw's tiny pieces of shame.
During the time of the black smoke, Novus tightened his grip around the girl's ankles and bolted out of the room by stepping on one of the collapsed guards' chest. Of course, as macho as that man, he could not help but cough and choke in agony as the weight of two people applied pressure on his lungs.
One thing that Novus was fairly proud of himself was his speed. He could outrun all of his friends in the Scarecrow, therefore making him number one at escaping on foot. Moreover, he had a light body. He was able to make his movements imperceptible. And that was why Boss chose him on this mission.
The girl on resting on his back seemed to be entirely insouciant about her surroundings. Novus was beginning to be uneasy. It was like she had no emotions whatsoever, glazed, bleak. "Hey...er..are you okay?" Turning his head towards the gorgeous girl, Novus asked between breaths. She was unbelieveably light for some reason, sometimes he even wondered she was there. He swore that he would not notice if she just fell off from his back.
The girl regarded the boy with innocent eyes.
Eyes that had no pupil. Eyes that glint due to absolutely nothing.
Eyes, that had minute pure white snowflakes floating at the edge.
"!!!" Novus cringed on the image he saw. His left foot accidentally tangled with his right. He almost fell flat on his face along with the innocent victim on his back. Vacillating, he leered at the girl's orbs once more. Although he predicted the outcome, he still gulped instinctly in apprehension the second time he saw it.
He could not be wrong. It matched the description that was given to him.
Azul, Novus's mouth shaped into the word inaudibly. It was identical. Her eyes. "Wow," he said, trying to dodge the appalled emotions. "That aught'a put a damper on things." The forced easy-going laughter turned into something awkward. Novus's voice became shaky. He needed time to adjust himself in order to fight because they were not officially rid of the dangerous situation. It was impossible for gems to turn into humans, he analyzed. However, if the gem was from a meteorite-from outer space, it was not unlikely to happen.
Novus set her down when they turned into a inconspicuous corner. He scrutinized the mystic girl carefully, and eventually touched her face. She was real. He could truly feel it, although amazed. "Tell me." The young thief said in a solemn tone, his emerald green eyes glinted in uncertainty. "Are you Azul..?"
As if his inquiry were transmitted into her heart through his hand on her face, girl looked away from him. She was clearly very perplexed with the situation.
"I see." Novus murmured, smiling kindly at the girl. "You must be scared." He stood up and took out the dagger from his sheath:"Don't worry. I won't let you fall into those guys' hands." He tried to flash a comforting smile towards her direction, but his confidence was not limited. He knew that he could not get out of this situation without seeking certain help from his comrades. This was too far beyond a mission for him to decide what was supposed to be done. Without futher ado, Novus dodged the pants he borrowed from the security guards and quickly pulled out his walkie-talkie; he felt so much lighter without the weight of 13 walkie-talkies.
"Chief! Can you hear me, Chief?"
Bad luck came at the worst time possible, cussed Novus in frustration. All he received was static, so his message probably did not get delivered to the airship properly. Those people must had done something to scramble up the signal. "Damn, I guess we'd have to run." He turned to the girl and said.
"You're not going anywhere!!" A familiar voice roared angrily in the air. The plump boss and the skinny wannabe showed up along with the team of keen security guards, closing the two people into a deadend. "How did you get the girl out??!" Inquired the fat boss.
Novus sighed in his stupidity. He still did not figure it out? "Starthas, sir! Reporting for duty, sir!!" He imitated the character he used for disguise and smiled mischieviously as soon as the boss recognized his identity. "I'm not bad an actor, eh? Of course, I used to work in the theatre." His smile went closer to his ear when the boss' face began to turn blue.

Checkmate(original) Chapter 2

Pain.
The girl had never experienced it before.
Therefore, she did not know what it was called.
All she knew was, that after the maids had managed to put a dress on her in another room, her legs collapsed as those people were trying to lift her up. The body was not used to the weight.
Her face hit the ground fiercely. A ring occured in her head; her visions blurred for a second. The unpleasant feeling slowly spreaded all over her body.
She narrowed her eyes.
The fat man was still beside her. The short one sat down on the couch, appraising her more closely this time. A flow of annoyance was within his orbs as he examined everything about her.
She was too beautiful, too distracting.
That was why it was irritating.
She was too perfect that he could not find himself to do anything to her, even resenting her seemed stupid and weird, although she was the reason the second Azul disappeared.
The two Azuls were both from a meteorite that was just discovered approximately one week ago.
Nobody knew where they came from.
The local workers cut the mysterious stones and polished them. But soon they were confiscated by the national jewelry museum.
The gems had unprecedented characteristics.
One of them vanished a fews days after it was brought to the museum.
The police was not able to find the culprit. The investigation was an irrevocable fail. There was no evidence, no fingerprint, no footage, no trace, no nothing. The camera did not catch anything, all they knew was that one second it was there, and the next second it wasn't.
Even the glass box was closed.
He worked so hard to persuade the museum into letting him have the one left.
After all his work was downright annihilated, he could not hate her.
She seemed that chaste.
The fat man placed his enormously disgusting fingers under the girl's delicate chin, lifting her head up in order to get a better view.
The eyelids were shut close.
"Hmmm, listen, you." The fat man spoke, his face was in such proximity to hers that she felt his breath. "Drop this fake innocence at this instant. The punishment would be much lighter if you confess now."
He thought this was threatening enough to a girl.
However, to her, it was merely a bunch of strange sound being inflicted into her ears.
Remembering how to move, the young girl's brain slowly gained control of her head.
The head obeyed her wish.
It snapped away.
This seemed like a sign of rebellion to the obeseded human.
Rage rushed through him, making his face scarlet than it already was:"So you won't tell, huh?" His hands were quivering slightly from clenching. He stood up, turning his back on her:"Very well then. Lock her in here until she tells us. No food no water. I would hit her but since she's got that pretty face we'll sell her for a good price." The man stroke the diamond ring on his forefinger and glared toward the girl with disgust:"It's the least she can do."
The sly and skinny one squinted the girl one more time before shutting the door behind him.
The girl was lying down, her face on the carpet, and slowly, slowly, she opened her eyelids.
The sunlight shone on her dark blue irises, which was reflected, making a beautiful rainbow in mid-air and a million of small glitter in her eyes.
There were no pupils.
* * *
"Suckers!"
Novus laughed happily as he was running towards the treasure chest. Those boots that the guards were wearing were extremely annoying to him, nonetheless now, he did not care.
This could just be the best scam he had pulled off.
Those idiots really listened to his ridiculous commands.
He did not expect them to be that moronic.
Apparently the guards had no obvious experience on sense of humor, but a lot on stupidity. Thanks to them, Novus decided to check out the Treasure Chest by himself instead of believing what those dumb guards were saying about the second Azul.
He ordered the guards to run all over town to search for the "escaping culprit". The "culprit" had eyes just above his forehead.
Luckily Starthas had a reputation on brains, or else they wouldn't have trust him.
Perhaps Starthas was not intelligent, it was just that the guards were complete idiots.
Recalling the memories, Novus chuckled again.
The pants felt kind of heavy. It must be all those walkie-talkie Novus had managed to sneak out of their pockets. 13 walkie-talkies, plus his own, was not a pleasant weight.
A professional thief should at least have the skills to commit soundless crimes. Although his huge group did both theft and robbery.
He had to admit that his group did not particularly have a so-called "good" image. However all the Scarecrow members were devout to each other.
Why did he have to be good anyways? There was no absolute justice in this world, everyone was doing something for themselves, even the government. There was good within the bad; there was bad within the good as well. He would rather be in a straightforward thief group than be one of those hypocritical syophants who were playing mind games with other sycophants all the time.
Even if he was in the goody goody side,
He would not be qualified to anyways.
Novus's laughter gradually ceased.
He had witnessed too many things in his life already.
Shaking his head, Novus slapped himself in the helmet. Now was not the appropriate time to think about this.
He was in a mission.
That was the only thing he should be thinking about right now.
His head snapped up when he heard the sound of footsteps. There was a dim conversation getting closer and closer to him. The auras which he sensed was not strong, therefore they must be the head of this facility. They would not be as easy to fool as those guards. After all, they were able to obtain this prodigiously fancy place.
Novus scanned around for a place to hide, but nothing was in sight. He stood in the middle of the corridor, tension building up in his body. A drip of sweat seeped out from his forehead, tracing around the shape of his face inside the helmet. It tickled him.
He had to confront them. It was better than being spotted standing here looking pretty.
Okay, here goes nothing.
He pushed his legs towards the chatters.
"SIR!!!!!!" Novus yelled at the top of his lungs, acting anxious and urgant in case they got a peep of him under the sunglasses.
It was the fat man and his wanna-be.
The superior's expression was full of annoyance which was clearly not towards him. The inferior had something on his mind.
The fat one crossed his arms when he saw Novus. Thinking that he was the member of the security team, he accused:"Where are the rest of the security team?? Uh....Starthas?!" The man glanced at his name tag before the last word.
Novus rolled his eyes underneath the sunglasses. Ignorant bosses. "The captain ordered me to guard Azul. I am new so I got lost..."
The superior's face was obviously suffocating when he said "Azul". His next sentence was forced out from his gritted teeth. "It's stolen. But fine," The scrawny man saw his boss's gesture and threw a key at Novus. "We got a ally of the thief. Here's the key to the room, since you're here might as well see if you can interrogate something out of her, Starfy."
"Starthas, sir. Starthas Brown." Novus reminded casually while contemplating about his plan. This man's words must be true....so it's really stolen. And so my mission now would be getting....wait, didn't he say girl?? He was described as a lot of things by his buddies, "skirt-chaser" being one of them. One of his best friends even proclaimed that the word "skirt-chaser" was invented for him. Even when traveling around the world like that, he had a stunning amount of relastionship records. Respecting all the females in this world and treat them like royalty was his nature slash policy, which would not be expired under any circumstances. Even the clueless headmaster could see sparks in his eyes under the black sunglasses.
"?"Both of the people were regarding him with perplexed eyes which made Novus somewhat awkward. This was definetely not the best time to show his weakness, not here, not now.
He knew how boss would treat people who screwed up their missions. His fists were like 50000 kilograms of lead being thrashed into wherever he felt like hitting.
Not like the boss did not love them, but he was brutal to those who were not capable of living up to his standards.
He lowered his head to look at the key.
It appeared to be similar to a room key, except it was made of silver and the edges were jagged with no pattern. The key felt smooth as a whole. This was the type of key that was most difficult to hack. He did bring some tools, but without this key, he would be spotted before he hear the click of a open lock. Although sweet talk the girl into opening the door for him would always be an option, sometimes thief girls were more vigilant than others. Besides, he did not favor in the idea of using his "charms" just to exploit females. That was plainly wrong, very, very wrong.
"Then, sir, please excuse me." He carefully put the key into his-Starthas'-pocket. The guard's trousers had only two pockets, which was way less convenient than his own pants that was practically made of pockets. One of the two pockets were filled with Starthas' things, therefore forcing him to put the key together with the piece of enigmatic silk.
His heart tightened when he felt the touch of the hankerchief.
"Oh and Starcrust." Fat man called Novus' back, who rolled his eyes with contempt at the superior's naming sense. He couldn't possibly be serious about thinking anybody would have that name. "If you do it well I'll add a big bonus to your wage." That wrinkled face contorted into a smile."You know what I mean?"
Novus feigned a surprised delight onto the corner of his mouth, the real him on the inside scoffed scornfully. Says the person who can't even get the name right. "Ah thank you, sir!" He made an effort to not sound monotonous and paced
away. A few meters out of their sight Novus sighed heavily. All the acting tired him even though the people were gullible. The corpulent leader bothered him a lot. Novus knew Starthas was not getting any bonus whether or not he really did question the girl well. The deceptive mask was too obvious. Nonetheless, he did not have the right to criticize anyone. After all, he was the one in disguise.
The hallway was well carpeted. There was no pratrait of anyone but identical oak doors. The ceiling was wooden, and the walls were cement grey. No color, no personality, monochrome.
Turn left, go straight, turn right, turn right, turn left, 20 steps forward.
Novus stood in front of the guest room right across from the treasure chest.
Shaking off his weary expression off from his face, he watched as the fingers plugged the key into the slot, making clattering sounds when the slot obediently rotated.
Something was glistening under the sunlight.
* * *
Somewhere above the treasure facility, the exuberant colored Scarecrow airship levitated tediously. The Scarecrow boss-Edraud Zytix, slouched on the couch. He stretched out a hand towards the alcohol bottle on the plastic table. Glass table would certainly be better, but he could not afford the price of replacing one everytime it crashes, he already had enough with the glass jugs. The room he was in had a beige bar counter with a fridge inside of it. The couch plus the table was on the other side of the wall. On his left side, the entire wall was an enclosed glass window, letting the sunlight sprinkle sparkles into the whisky as the liquid poured into the cup. This was the Scarecrow conference room, where they plan all the missions and eat like lunatic starved horses. Anyway, the macho boss was holding a electonic device, which seemed inconceivably small in his giant hand.
It was a tracking device placed inside Novus's walkie-talkie.
"What's that boy plann' on doin' now...?" Boss Edraud muttered, noticing his young apprentice entering the room in the opposite direction from their main target. He had known this kid ever since he was 3, shivering in the drizzling rain in a forest under the spruce tree with a tormented expression, body coiled by bruises.
"Boss!!! Bosssssssss!!!!!!"
The hand that was cradling the alcohol plucked to a precipitous halt. A frown fell between his eyebrows. "Will'ya people gimme some peace?! This better be good!" His deep but loud voice rang in the entire conference room.
One person rushed in. A man who was a brunette with hair that looked like it had just exploded. He looked rigidly tough for a 20 year old man. Edraud recognized him. Faw Quicktime, the main detective of the bloc. He was literally the access to any data bases, computers, and electronics. Sometimes he could hack into a person's car-under special occasions. Also he was one of Novus's best buddy, next to Shique Crimson-the sexy 18 year old blondie who was usually being used as "bait", and Travis Fig-the 16 year old hot tempered professional survivor, with over-tanned skin.
The boss snuggled into the couch as Faw stormed in, panting:"What up, Quicktime?! Boy look at ya all darned up cuz of runnin', ya gotta keep up to be in da group, y'know?!" He took at sip of the clear liquid, letting the taste leaving traces on the way down to his throat before he spoke:"So? What's the biggie this time?"
Faw scratched his eyes-the contacts he wore itched:"We need to abort mission, boss. Apparently the second Azul is stolen as well. Don't we need to let Nov kno-"
"No wonder!" Unexpectedly Edraud burst out a giant guffaw. He flicked his finger on the young man's forehead. "I was just wonderin' why that boy ain't goin' to our target! Nov must've knew!" The laughter seemed like Novus in peril was the least of his concern.
Faw's jaws dropped wide:"Aren't you worried, boss!?! There's no point for doing this now! Nov is in trouble for nothing!"
"Oh I won't call it trouble." Said the boss. "He's up da somethin'. Ya see?" He handed the tracking device into the young man's right palm. "He's not in the target! He found out somethin'! Right now, his informations are more accurate than yours, let's just wait here, 'kay?"
"Are you seriously not worried? Nov is like a son to you." Said Faw incredulously.
"If he's like mah son I gotta hav som' faith in'em."
The proud grin that stretched out from one end of his blond beard to the other made the detective having no other reason to object.
* * *
Novus was blown away.
The only thing that came out of his mouth after he saw the girl was a whisper that said something like:"Oh my goddess."
The girl was lying on the carpet wrapped around by a black long dress all the way to her knees, making a contrast with the snow white legs;her lush dark blue hair draping all over her body like water flushed into the room;her long eyelashes almost made a shadow on her face;her cherry lips were delicate yet tempting;her cheeks formed a perfect arc around the cheek bones but came together to a point in the middle of her chin. This kind of blemish-less creature, was now right in front of him, closing her eyes, possibly sleeping.
Even the so called player drew in his breath. But he tried to contain himself with his normal attitude..to girls of course. "Good afternoon Ms Gorgeous." He said in a flattered tone while taking off his helmet and sun glasses. He shook his hair so it did not look as abnormal.
The girl opened her eyelids, looking casually at him. This creature looked better than the two she dealt with;the sound frequence coming from him was way more steady and soothing. The color of his eyes intrigued her, it was a type of light mint turquoise, but with such depth and complexity.
She did not feel like moving.
"Wow, and I thought you'd be beautiful enough with your eyes closed! Those are the most pretty eyes i've ever seen!" Novus knelt down with one leg and put his left hand to his right chest, a very gentleman-like curtesy to a lady. Although after prasing her glinting blue orbs for a moment he noticed how hollow the eyes were. He could see the beautiful, deep irises filled with nothing. They had no emotion, no knowledge, no....pupil."Whoa." He inhaled once again. "Can you see properly?"
The girl tilted her head side ways innocently, as if wondering what he was saying. She liked him, he was the first one who was not brutal or mean to her. Like that fat man.
She stretched out her hands towards the boy. It was weird, she repulsed the touch of the creatures she saw before. He was....somehow different. The boy was not threatening.
Novus took her hand and kissed it like a gentleman. "Let me help you up, my lady. My name is Novus Zytix. I'm here to get you out." He bent down, trying to lift her up to her feet. Nonetheless the girl almost fell down onto the ground again instantly if Novus had a slow reaction. "Easy." He whispered to the girl's left ear when catching her on the waist. "You know what? You must be too tired for standing. I'll carry you myself." The boy said after he took off all the security guard things, including all the clothes. To this point, he did not have to be in disguise anymore. He perferred this way anyways, it was way lighter.
The unknown girl stared at the boy blankly as he gently put her on his back. She obediently rested her head on the shoulders. Her body was extremely light. The weightlessness surprised Novus. Though it was a good thing because he would not have to waste his stamina. "Now, let's get outta this place and maybe have some tea-" Before he could even finish the sentence, his body tensed. "Uh-oh."
The girl noticed the change in atmosphere. Without knowing what it was, she touched the sphere earring on Novus's left ear.
The karma was coming back to him.
Those guards were back.

Checkmate(original) Chapter 1

Prologue
The melody of the music surrounded the air like a mist.
The young girl stroked the instrument, her long eyelashes hid her eyes. The sorrow atmosphere was unreasonable. She lifted her eyes to look at the other side of the table, expression blank. There were two people who looked identical- one male and one female- sitting on the opposite side of the chessboard. All the pieces were scattered around, but the game had already ended. The female noticed the girl’s gaze and met her eyes idly. She dropped her stare immediately, and began to play the music once again. A servant like her could not disobey the owner, even though she did not say anything.
The female was silent.
“Sister,” The brother sighed to the female in front of him. “Don’t you give any sympathy to your twin brother? This is a difficult game.” A smile flashed through his eyes, and his sister saw it perfectly. “But I still won.”
Her lips parted slightly.“Did you truly win?” Her voice sounded as if she had the power to subside the roaring of the ocean. She glanced at the chessboard, pointing at a blank space that was at the right of where her queen stood. “Count your pieces. to break this game, you need one more.”
The brother’s expression gradually became somber, exactly like his sister's. Their faces seemed transparent as ice. “Sister…” He whispered.
The sister picked up the bishop with her thumb and forefinger. The fabric on her arm fell, revealing her snow white skin. “I know.” She replied. “I will be your final pawn.”
It was midnight, and the music stopped.

Chapter 1
The blue sky.
The birds were flying freely until a small dot appeared in the way. It was getting bigger and bigger, and eventually turned into a magnificent airship. The birds squawked in panic, flapping their wings and pushing themselves towards their own direction. The group was broken.
The engine of the airship roared in the sky; vibrating, claiming that it was the king. It was painted in various colors: the head was shining gold, the wings were fiery scarlet, and the body was lightning yellow. The colors were in such harmony that it seemed like no other colors would be more compatible. There were also gigantic letters written in white on the side of the vehicle. Like the colors, it was in a unique style.
“The Scarecrows”
People were running, each rushing to their own destination. Chatters were everywhere.
“Hey, Novus! Get outta’ere! We ain’t got time for procrastinatin’! The target’s near!” A muscular blond man hollered. The hallway was suddenly filled with his impatient echo.
“Boss! He is already out there!” A person who was much shorter than him yelled back.
“Good!” The chief said as he ran to the piloting room. His footsteps hit furiously on the ground until he reached the room and kicked the door open. He jerked his goggles out of his eyes and thrust them aside. The pilots were not startled by his brutal actions, like they were expecting it. One of them shifted his body to give the head some space. The giant man grabbed the announcer:” Attention, all Scarecrow members in position, all Scarecrow members in position. The mission has begun. Activate the sky-deck and get ready for descent.”
“Boss, there is a call from Nov.” the pilot beside him reported when the man turned off the announcer. He offered his headphones and microphone to him.
With the sky-deck slowly stretching out, a boy hopped onto the vibrating ground. The sign of youth was still in his face. He looked fifteen years old and had blond hair which tied loosely to a short ponytail. The tank top and cougar pants made him look dashing. Before buckling the short swords on his belt, the boy took the walkie-talkie out of one of the many pockets. “Boss,” he said. “I already located the destination from above. Look at how fancy that place is! I guess that person wants to be popular pretty badly.”
“We’ll save this chit-chat later when celebratin’. Are you ready?” The man’s voice appeared yet again.
“As always.” The boy grinned widely, confidence and excitement flickered in his green eyes. “Bring it on, boss.”
At the other side of the walkie-talkie, the man chuckled. “I’ll bring it then.” Knowing his apprentice was listening to him carefully, his eyes turned serious. “Listen good. After ya go in, grab as many jewels as ya want, I believe you ought’a pick’em ones that looks fancy. Our main goal’s a jewel called 'Azul'. It’s a pair of darn pretty jewels. Blue, has snowflakes on the edge, you’ll know when ya see it.”
“Azul.” The boy repeated the word, forcing it into his head. “Got it.”
The man bellowed through his shoulders towards the people outsides of the piloting room:”What are ya people doin’?? Are the slide chains ready???”
The volume reached the boy’s ears along with the loud feedback, screeching on his ear drums:”Geez, boss. Be patient, you are going to burst your veins one day.” Then, hearing the affirmation about the slide chains, he nipped the walkie-talkie between his shoulder and his ear; pulling out a pair of thick, leather gloves on his fingers. On the gloves' palms were some metal clips that looked like they were specifically made to join with something.
Slowly, two circular lids opened on the wall of the airship just above the boy, and two cannon-like tubes stretched out. Then each of the cannons fired out a tough, metal woven chains. Quickly shoving the walkie-talkie between his teeth, Novus leaped up in order to catch the metal handles that were attached to chains before they went beyond his reach, and watched as the silver chains wrapped themselves around a tree. Because the handles were now stationary in his hands, the friction between the chain and the handles made millions of little sparks.
Abruptly, the walkie-talkie in his mouth beeped.
He counted the beeps in his mind.
One,two,three,four,five,six.
Signal translation: It was time to kick those rich butts.
With his hands holding onto the chains, the blond haired boy first leaned backwards, then dashed out of the sky deck. The clips from the palm of his gloves automatically clipped onto the handles just a second before he slid downwards.
Feeling the wind whooshing into his ears, Novus’s mouth was able to curve into a crooked arc of anticipation. (It was considerably hard to do with a thing in your mouth…just saying.)
Robbing this treasure facility should be fun.

The girl opened her eyes in the dark.
Everything was so unfamiliar to her.
The darkness, the coldness, the thoughts. Everything.
Everything was blank.
She twitched her forefinger. The touch of wood rapidly made its way through her nervous system, although she did not have the capability to recognize it.
Her left arm felt sore. Following the sore feeling, she traced her eyes from her shoulder to the hand up in the air.
Those were her arms.
She did not know how to put them down.
The girl's eyes rolled around, the blue light shimmering in the darkness.
A knot was in her throat.
The room was narrow.
It felt hard to breathe.
Her body remembered that she was claustrophobic.
But she herself had no memory what so ever.
She touched her throat.
...."So you're able to get "Azul" here."
A dark, stable, strange sound frequency entered her ear. It startled her.
"Y-yes. I just want to say that I've worked really hard on negotiating...."Another one of them. Similar but squeakier. "I hid it in here..."
"Okay, let's see it then." The door creaked open, light pouring into the room. The whiteness made the girl narrow her eyes. It was blinding.
Two standing shadows reflected in her retina. One was obese, round and big;another one short and skinny. Before she could see the details on their faces, the two men saw her first.
What they saw was a young girl with long, straight dark blue hair lying on the wooden floor staring at them innocently, body fully exposed without any clothes on. The snow white skin was perfectly visible.
They froze.
"Gah!!!" Yelped the short one. "Azul is gone!!!"
There were random pieces that seem to be a part of the jewelry box, all scattered around the girl. There was also a piece of fine embroidered silk lying beside the girl's head.
"......If this is some stupid prank you're pulling on me....you have no idea how dead you are going to be." The fat man hissed. The twitching on the corner of his mouth and the veins that were popping out from his forehead conveyed how furious he was.
The short man denied in panic:"No! I didn't do it! I don't even know who she is! I locked the room!!"
The superior waved his giant hand impatiently to the urgent explanation. Beckoning the passing maid, he ordered her to get the girl some clothes.
One of the maids walked towards the girl, trying to help her up. The moment the maid's fingers wrapped around the girl's arms, the naked girl instinctly slapped those fingers away. Then, after the unexpected actions, she shifted her eyes towards her own hand, expression shocked and horrified. She was sitting up now, though she herself was not aware of that. She concentrated, and her hand clenched and unclenched. She had no recollection of this power, this control.
The fat man was now impatiently yelling something into his cellphone. His spit was spruting out of his mouth. The short and sly one, on the other hand, was scratching his greasy auburn hair, examining parts of the jewelry box anxiously. A second before this incident happened, he thought that he would be promoted for sure. But now, that blue glimmering glory vanished before he could even catch it.
His sixth sense felt the premonition.
And sixth senses never lie.

"Okay....let's see...."
Novus scrutinized his surroundings.
He had memorized every single part of this facility before the mission. The boss specifically made sure that everybody in the group knew where all the traps, surveillance cameras, secret tunnels and doorways were.
The map he saw distinctly in his head converted into a three dimensional version. He was in an open lobby room with machines, transportations, elevators, escalators, and electic beeps that would eventually get into people's nerves. The entire room was gray; the floor was made out of marble. It was difficult for him to not make any sounds.
The lobby was like a enormous cylinder. And on each side there were various kinds of passage ways. One of them looked like a garage door.
This must be….
"The transit center." He clicked his tongue.
All the valuable gems and jewelries were preserved in one place, what he and his groupies called “the Treasure Chest”. The transit center was located on the very north of the whole facility, and the Treasure Chest was in the south-west. His brain analyzed quickly. He was facing inwards, which was south.
The route to the Treasure Chest was intricate. Nonetheless, after all that training, he knew exactly where to go.
Normally all the guards were supposed to be in the conference room ending their shift at this time, giving Novus plenty of opportunities to prowl all he wanted.
However, it seemed to be a deviation today. Although there were no guards in here currently, he could sense their presence. There were at least 10 guards who were close to where he was at the moment, hindering the path he needed to go through.
It wouldn’t be fun if the treasure hunt is not worth a challenge.
Soundlessly he concealed himself under the shadow of the enormous escalator on his left side. If the guards were where he sensed they were, the escalators would block his figure perfectly.
Novus pressed his back hard against the wall, warily sticking his blond head out to peep at the hallway full of guards. 13 people, each holding a power-loaded taser, expression threatening. They looked mighty to him. He might manage to get through without being busted if he sent at least half of them away.
Lifting his right leg, he steadily reached out for his pocket around the ankle of his pants. A grenade was in his hand when it came out. It was a special smoke bomb, he only had 2 of them. Boss warned him to use it only during an emergency to escape.
He popped the lid out with his teeth while the other hand gripped on the short swords on his waist.
The smoke grenade dropped on the ground. It exploded into a big puffs of black smoke that was totally not environmental friendly.
No way the guard could have ignored that.
The husky men dashed out near the elevator. They could not see anything under the smoke.
Unlike Novus.
One of the guards was intending to report this to the headmaster, though he went unconscious before he could press down the button. The body made a huge thud when it hit the ground, but the other guards were too distracted to notice it.
Exhaling, Novus yanked the uniform off the man and pulled it on over his own clothes. This one was the shortest in the team and possibly the weakest. He had targeted that man from the second he saw him. The uniform was slightly long for him, but not long enough to make anybody suspicious.
He quickly glanced at his watch.
The bomb would last for another 30 seconds.
Fortunately there was a storage room in front of him. Novus dragged the man’s leg into the dark, humid space.
The store room was small, it was all wooden, except for the concrete walls. A couple of shelves were visible. In the center of this room, there was a stool. Around the stool, were small blue segments lying around, as if something had just broke free from there. When Novus went into the room, he shoved the man in too hard, sothat one of the spiky segments pierced through his mouth when his head plummeted down. He had no hostility towards the man, instead he was quite appreciative to him for letting him “borrow” his uniforms. He accidently thrust the man like that because something else drew his attention.
A piece of blue silk, embroidered with flowers and snowflakes.
“Wow…that thing must worth a ton of money.”
Novus had seen silk and a lot more valuable things in his life. But he had never seen anything like that hankerchief before. Even his eyes could not identify the material of that thing.
As much as it seemed like silk.....
It was glowing.
It was really glowing, in a luminous bright blue color, which was conspicuous in the dark room.
Novus was completely intrigued. He picked it up and tugged it in his pocket under the uniform before he put on the guard's helmet along with the sunglasses and scurried outside.
The sprinkler system seemed to have detected the smoke. It was spouting out liquid frantically, drenching the carpet.
The smoke was mostly gone by now. The guards were still around the escalator, all saturated and cranky.
Novus-in disguise-walked up to them in a "I didn't do nothin'" kind of manner as if he was the guard. He could not let them count and realize one of their companions was missing.
None of them doubted his identity.
"Hey Starthas! Where were you just now!?" The tallest of the guards bellowed at him when he reached them. There was a heinous mole under his lower lip. Novus exerted all his will to not smirk at his "beauty mark".
He'd observed the personality of the guard he knocked out. His name was Starthas Brown, the lowest rank in this group due to his height and body structure. He had a way lower voice than Novus. Lowering the pitch of his voice, Novus mumbled to the mole-man:"Ah, sir, I was reporting this situation to the headquarters. I couldn't talk in the smoke." Starthas usually talked in a polite slash weak attitude, so this answer would be most appropriate.
"What's up with your voice, bro? It's a little hoarse." Another guard, who did not wear the helmet and glasses, looked into his eyes under the sunglasses. He was Starthas' closest friend in this squad, so far.
It was difficult to tell the difference of eyecolor when a pair of sunglasses were in the way. Novus knew that perfectly well. Without any guilt or nervousness, he stared into the guard's pupils. "The smoke is kind of messing up my throat." He replied with a cough, deliberately making it pathetic.
Other members regarded him in defiance. Novus scoffed sardonically in his mind, he sympathized with Starthas.
"Filthy thieves." The mole-man cussed under his breath. "Like the first Azul didn't disappear because of them, and now the second one is gone too."
What? Pondered Novus. The boss never mentioned that the first Azul was missing. And that there was only one of them in this facility. But most importantly, the Azul in here was gone as well.Boss always gets the fastest and latest information. Perhaps it happened right before the mission. He did not dare to ask, though, for he could not take any chances to raise skepticism. He needed to contact the boss. At this instant.
"Hey, what did the chairman say when you reported this?" The mole-man demanded with a gruff voice.
It seemed like they actually believed him. It was a good thing that those guards, although with bodies like buildings, were so dumb to fool.
That meant he could manipulate them however he wanted.
Novus grinned in triumph when the guards were not looking.
This mission is getting more and more interesting.
