Prologue
She saw a dream.
Of the place that she used to love.
Shone by the bright light, she sat down on the wet cold stone. While she gazed at the wide sapphire ocean, the playful wind twirled on her long black hair, bringing some dust and sand into her eyes.
If she looked down, she would see several circular pillars being surrounded by a wall.
The adults would not let her or any other kids enter.
However, after listening to her parent's vivid descriptions, she knew that many magnificently beautiful beasts were being carved on the wall. The place was called "Eidolon Wall"-a sacred sanctuary of the people in her village.
She loved that place.
She loved places that were quiet yet magical, especially this one. She could feel the life in the beasts just by watching them.
Nonetheless, she was not permitted to go in.
So she found this place.
The place where she could watch the walls and gaze at the sea. It was a secret place for her which the grown-ups had a hard time finding.
She did not want to go home just yet. But because she had nowhere else to go, she came here and chose to swing her snow-white legs at the ocean as well as the wall.
My mother must be worrying about me....
Chagrin spread in her heart.
".....I knew you're here."
Called by the name Sarah , the girl turned her head around. The boy with green irises was in front of her eyes.
"Alexend...."
Relieved, she whispered the boy's name.
Alexend narrowed his kind emerald eyes as he sat down beside her.
"Your mom is worried about you."
"...Oh"
"Are you....being picked on by those guys again?"
Sarah descended her head. He was half right and half wrong.
"Just ignore them. They are just jealous that Sarah is so cute so they said mean stuff."
Just ignore them. Alexend repeated.
He was referring to the two boys living in the village. There were merely 4 kids in this village. Including Sarah and Alexend, Sarah was the only girl. Perhaps this was the reason why she was often being picked on by those two like getting insulted and frightened when they gave her ooglops. She could not stop them, so she would always end up getting the help from Alexend-the oldest child.
Alexend, who was different than the other two, was extremely kind and nice to Sarah. Even though they were all kids, he was extraordinarily calm, knowledgeable, safe, and fun to be with.
"Let's go home."
Saying those words, he held out his hand.

Staring at his stretched out hand, then his face, Sarah slowly dropped her eyes.
"You don't want to go home? Did something happen?"
With an astonished expression, Alexend scrutinized her face. The soft tea-colored hair and those emerald irises were reflected in Sarah's eyes.
"Just now....I found it."
"The butterfly?"
She nodded.
Yes, she found a butterfly along side of the stream.
Butterflies were extinctively rare in this village. Sarah never knew that there was such a creature, so she examined the one that was resting on the rock like she was about to eat it.
Those two wings were of dark purple; they were so thin, as if the sunlight could pierce through and burn them. The color of purple went deeper and deeper as the edge stretched out, connecting itself to the body.
Without thinking, Sarah stretched out her hands and caught it. It did not retaliate.
Then, she brought it home.
Nonetheless, the moment Sarah's father saw the butterfly in her clasped hands, he froze.
[What are you doing? If you see anything like that again let it go!]
The voice was so frightening that it made her take a step backwards.

Her father's furiously lifted eyebrows terrifying. She could not bear but to bolt out of the house with that butterfly.
I was so scared.....
Sarah's father did not talk much, nor cared on regular basis. But she never thought of her father "scary" until just now. She never got scold so badly.
Sarah returned to the stream and released the butterfly as told.
Although she did not know why she would get scolded by bringing a rare butterfly to her house, but her father's roar was so ferocious that it gave Sarah an impression that butterflies were omniously scary.
The butterfly fluttered its wings and flew away.
Slightly relieved, Sarah intended to leave quickly. At that moment, she saw the two boys who teases her.
Normally she would escape from them, running with panic, and reach here. Those two boys did not know a place like this. The only people who knew about this were her and Alexend. But this time she froze from the fear of being found, and the fear of going home to meet her father at the same time. Without another choice, she ended up gazing at the ocean and the wall. She felt that the soothing atmosphere of the ocean, the sky and the Eidolon Wall would somewhat accept her.
......After the entire story was revealed, Alexend sat silently, like he was contemplating something.
"Maybe...the butterfly that Sarah found, was the "Butterfly of Resurrection""
That voice was so calm and quiet. It made Sarah anxious.
"Butterfly of Resurrection?"
"Um, yes. Did the butterfly’s have the pattern of a flower?"
Now that he mentioned it, she remembered that it did have such patterns. It had a twisted flower emboidered on the end of the left wing.
"I've heard of it from my grandpa before. He said you are not supposed to catch that butterfly."
"Why?"
"The butterfly of resurrection is different than the other butterflies. I thought it's just a myth......You know that if a person dies, the body would return to the soil, right? But the soul wouldn't and it would stay instead. So the bodyless soul would ponder around, eventually turning into a purple butterfly and fly towards the one that he or she cared most. So you must not get in the way of the butterfly on its way to that person."
"That..."
While gulping, Sarah murmured.
"If you caught it...what will happen?"
"I don't know."
Sarah shuddered. What should I do, what should I do? I caught it...!
"Your father shouted at you because he was worried about you. He was worrying about you a lot when I just bumped into him. He was searching for you with all his will."
"My father is...."
"Yeah, so, let's go home."
Sarah hesitated at the stretched out hand once more.
"Will I.....be cursed?"
"Sarah"
"I'm scared....!" She wrapped the arms around her knees and quivered.
As if hindering the uptight face, the black hair fell over her eyes.
She was scared. She never knew that butterfly was like that. What terrified her the most was that Alexend and her parents would get cursed just by being with her.
"I'm scared..."
That instant, she felt warmth on her left shoulder.
"It's okay."
The calm voice echoed at the edge of her ears. Alexend embraced Sarah's head gently, the body warmth came to her along with the voice.
"It's okay."
His voice was subduing. It's okay, everything is fine.
"I'm here. I will protect Sarah."
She felt relief spreading through every cell in her body. The tremoring subsided slowly.
"Plus, your mother and father are here. It's fine."
It's okay, Alexend said in a comforting tone.
Why was she suddenly so relieved? Though that fact that she was being consoled by Alexend's warmth was indisputably true.
"Hey, let's go home. Go back to the place where Sarah would be protected. ....It's okay, no need to be scared. I am here."
She nodded, still whimpering inside his arms. He pulled away by helping Sarah get up.
"Let's go home"
Joining hands, they began to walk. Feeling the relief more than ever, she turned her back on the ocean.
"Thank you."
Hearing the whisper, Alexend turned around and grined widely at her. She smiled too.
Before disappearing completely out of sight, Sarah turned around again.

--------------The purple wings flapped and danced in mid-air.

[Sarah!]
The view abruptly changed.
Her balance collapsed in a second.
The blue sky was now covered in thick, dark clouds.
Wind drummed in her ears as if trying to invade the inside her body.
She heard cries everywhere.
In front of her eyes, was the sea of fire.
And in the dream, she was running.
[You run away first!!]
[Sarah, run! Hurry!!]
[Sarah!]
[Run!!----Live!!!!]
It was her father's voice that she heard from her back. And her mother-who she saw in front of her, was dragging her hands, stumbling.
The threatening wind, the demolishing fire, the smell of charred wood and the farmiliar faces. The echoing roars, cries, and screams from the soul.

"Ahhhhhhhnooooooooo!!!!!!!!"

"Garnet?!"
Startled, Garnet's eyes flew open.
The sky blue orbs were in her sight.
"Garnet, are you okay?"
It was Zidane, who was watching her with concern.
"Zidane...."
It was her usual bedroom. So that must be a dream.
Garnet was breathing unevenly with her chest heaving. Even though the weather was not hot, she felt she was sweating through her night gown.
Dazed, she touched her face as if confirming that this was reality. There were a couple of tear traces. And now, more tear were starting to flood out.
"What happened, Garnet? You were screaming so hard."
Gently wiping the tears away with his fingers, Zidane inquired.
But Garnet was not able to answer immediately.
It was too real to be a dream.
Of course. Because this actually happened.
Inside of the storm, she and her mother were on a boat.
Her father died trying to make a chance for them to escape. Her mother went lifeless, protecting her daughter from the storm. She did not know what happened to Alexend. Nonetheless, she lost her memory and set her feet on the land of Madain Sari again after a few years, and met the last survivor of the village-Eiko.
Garnet, incapable to endure it anymore, shoved herself into Zidane's chest.
"Garnet?"
Zidane widened his eyes a bit, but softly placed his arms around her.
She heard Zidane calling out her name with more fear than usual.
"Zidane...don't disappear."
The painful, shaking voice.
Instinctly, those arms around the maiden tightened.
"Please....Zidane...don't disappear..."
She begged while her tears dripped down.
Her father died, her mother died, and that smart, kind boy disappeared. Her stepmother and father who loved her like their real child, and that tiny Vivi who fought until the end and taught her a lot of things also died . Everyone out of everyone, vanished from Garnet's world.
I don't want anybody else I care to leave.....!
"It's okay."
Said Zidane slowly, comfortingly.
One of his hands wrapped around Garnet, while the other one gently stroked her head.
"It's okay. I'll always be here. Beside Garnet."
Like her life was relying on those words, she buried her face in his arms.
The tears gushed out again.
[It's okay. I'm here. I will protect Sarah.]
The feeling she felt back then was not affection. But she could not deny it. She had always loved that intelligent, kind, and calm boy.
Alexend.......
She did not want to lose Zidane like she had lost Alexend. If she did, she would crumple.
That night, Garnet wept inside Zidane's chest until the tears dried out.
And during that time, Zidane hugged her protectively without pulling away. While repeating "It's okay", he stroked her hair until the very end-------------------

  1. What a coincidence...

I just started replaying the whole of Final Fantasy 9 again...

Pah, those people who worship Final Fantasy 7 and Cloud do not understand the quality of Zidane...

Though I still like FF7, I still prefer FF9 and FF10, Zidane and Tidus being my favorite, LOL

    Anyway, love this fanfic!!!
